RE: Microsoft Word Advanced Training

That’s right. You have Word on every computer in your home and business.

But did you know that Word could do this?

Those are just a few of the secrets that hardly anyone knows about using this marvelous program.

How does this help me make money?

If you are still working outside the home, having these skills will increase your marketable worth, therefore helping you make more money. Secretaries with great word processing skills are more valuable to their employeers and can generally command higher salaries.

If you work at home, consider becoming a Virutal Assistant. Based on the Interntational Virtual Assistant Association, their members charge from $15 an hour to $100 an hour. You better believe the ones that command higher fees have top notch word processing skills.

Imagine working 10 or 15 hours a week for several different clients. You may get paid $300 or so. That sounds okay, but not fantastic. With the skills you learn in this class you can raise your rates because once you master them, you will be able to get and do more complicated types of work.

Not only will you be able to use advanced features to do projects you never thought you could, but get this - you will get your work done faster when you learn all the shortcuts Microsoft Word has to offer.

Who Can Benefit From Learning to Use Word?

Here are just a few examples.

Creators of Documents

If you have a hard time getting the words out of your head, write or record an audio of what you want to say.

Don’t mess with the creative flow of writing by concentrating on the formatting. That is like building a house and having the guys who are laying the foundation choose the kind of carpet to lay in each room before they do the foundation in another room.

Choose your style of writing, make an outline or sit down and just start writing. Don’t be concerned about how headings look, merely type them in and maybe put Chapter 1”, “Section 1”, etc. so that you know what type of heading it will be, if you know. You can always make that decision later.

Copywriters

You can format as you go or format it later.

Show editing with marked-through text to compare one version to the next.

Web Masters

You can tweak a word processing document with formatted styles and create an HTML file from within Word. Since all the different types of text have been “coded” as headings, the formatting for that text should be the same.

You can create and apply a style to provide consistency for every set of text that is centered, bold, red and large instead of applying each attribute separately.

Word will allow you to change everything that has that style once instead of finding and changing each one at a time.

You can generate HTML code for phrases without having to code every line of text.

Editors

Edit someone else’s document and save your version as v2, v3, etc. Then “compare” the two documents and create a document to show the changes you made.

Highlight questionable items with a highlighter to catch your reviewer’s attention.

Create text balloons viewed in the margin with questions or suggestions or view deleted words with strike-throughs and underlined inserted words.

eBook Authors & Creators

Create large print eBooks.

Styles allows you to change the formatting on a document that has different sized fonts for the primary and secondary headings to make everything larger.

Transcribers

Just like writers, transcribers can use styles to create a document that has uniformity throughout without having to manually format.

You can copy style sheets from one document to another, one computer to another.

Homeschool Families Who Track Information or Generate Lists

Create forms and templates instead of recreating documents from scratch.

Create numbered lists.

Get the document to renumber if you delete one item.

Get the document to renumber if you add one item.

Get the document to renumber if you move the items around.

There’s More to Word Than You Realize

If you plan to spend very much time on a computer, you need to take the time to invest in a little education in order to get the most out of it.

I went to dinner with a very interesting couple while I was in Nashville in August and realized that even though I have worked as an editor, a transcriber, an author and a copywriter online for about five years, there is so much I don’t know about using Word.

I sat mesmerized by the amount of knowledge that poured out of this word processing expert. It didn't take me long to realized that I needed to take her class.

The problem was she didn’t have a class. She didn’t even know of one I could take. So I said...

Let’s Create a Class!

I have begged, whined, and haunted her until she has finally given up and decided to teach a
4 week class on Advanced Strategies for Microsoft Word.

This word processing expert is Denise Henry of Louisville, Kentucky.

Denise has worked with word processing on the PC for over 20 years .

When she first started with an accounting firm in the early 80’s, word processing on their first PCs was very easy to learn. After all, its capabilities were not much more than underline, bold, and center.

She also had plenty of opportunities to play on the computer when she wasn’t busy. In pre-Windows days, WordPerfect controlled all the functions of the computer with the keys on the top of the keyboard – F1 to F12. And you used the key, the key plus ALT, SHIFT or Control to do everything you needed. When she wasn’t busy, she would experiment to see what each of the keys would do.

She learned everything WordPerfect could do, and as they started adding features and updates, she studied those too. She’s taken all she learned with WordPerfect and transferred it to Word.

She feels you need a general idea of what Word can do in order to get the most out of it. If you never knew Word has math functions like adding and multiplying, you might never think of using it to do your invoices on the computer instead of printing or handwriting them.

Because of her ability to share what she knows, she ended up as either the informal or formal help desk person in her department. The bonus for her was that by helping others solve their problems and teaching them how to use the software, she became better at what she was doing.

That knowledge has enabled Denise to be able to get more done faster. In most of the jobs she’s had, she has actually been promoted because she was able to get her work done so fast that she was able to take on more responsibilities.

One of Denise Henry’s favorite sayings is “Work Smarter, Not Harder”

Here’s Denise’s philosophy of work:

“While I’m not afraid of hard work, why make things harder than they need to be? If you’ve got a better mouse trap – lead me there. In addition, I like to push the equipment and software to its fullest, and I have actually been in a job where you didn’t get new equipment until you made what you had do more than it was supposed to do.

“While I don’t mind doing any type of work, if I’ve got to do the same things over and over again, I’m always going to want to find an easier, faster way to do it. You should never reinvent the wheel to do a project. There are only so many hours in the day, and I want to get the most out of my time, whether it is as work or at home.

“When those of us in Rhea’s Proteges coaching club took Mauricio’s MS Excel class, we were asked to find the one thing that we were good at – that one thing that we are on the earth for. I realized it was to pass on these skills to other people. I am great at using the computer. I can usually sit down with software I’ve never used and figure it out relatively easily.”
