That is like building a house and having the guys who are laying the foundation choose the kind of carpet to lay in each room before they do the foundation in another room. Choose your style of writing, make an outline or sit down and just start writing. Don’t be concerned about how headings look, merely type them in and maybe put Chapter 1”, “Section 1”, etc. so that you know what type of heading it will be, if you know. You can tweak a word processing document with formatted styles and create an HTML file from within Word. Since all the different types of text have been “coded” as headings, the formatting for that text should be the same. You can create and apply a style to provide consistency for every set of text that is centered, bold, red and large instead of applying each attribute separately. Word will allow you to change everything that has that style once instead of finding and changing each one at a time. You can generate HTML code for phrases without having to code every line of text.

I went to dinner with a very interesting couple while I was in Nashville in August and realized that even though I have worked as an editor, a transcriber, an author and a copywriter online for about five years, there is so much I don’t know about using Word.

Denise has worked with word processing on the PC for over 20 years .
When she first started with an accounting firm in the early 80’s, word processing on their first PCs was very easy to learn. After all, its capabilities were not much more than underline, bold, and center.
She also had plenty of opportunities to play on the computer when she wasn’t busy. In pre-Windows days, WordPerfect controlled all the functions of the computer with the keys on the top of the keyboard – F1 to F12. And you used the key, the key plus ALT, SHIFT or Control to do everything you needed. When she wasn’t busy, she would experiment to see what each of the keys would do.
She learned everything WordPerfect could do, and as they started adding features and updates, she studied those too. She’s taken all she learned with WordPerfect and transferred it to Word.
She feels you need a general idea of what Word can do in order to get the most out of it. If you never knew Word has math functions like adding and multiplying, you might never think of using it to do your invoices on the computer instead of printing or handwriting them.
Because of her ability to share what she knows, she ended up as either the informal or formal help desk person in her department. The bonus for her was that by helping others solve their problems and teaching them how to use the software, she became better at what she was doing.
That knowledge has enabled Denise to be able to get more done faster. In most of the jobs she’s had, she has actually been promoted because she was able to get her work done so fast that she was able to take on more responsibilities.
