Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, said:
1. "Enjoy life with the woman whom you love all the days of your fleeting life which He has given to you under the sun; for this is your reward in life,
2. and in your toil in which you have labored under the sun. Whatever your hand finds to do, verily, do it with all your might (Ec. 9:9-10)
The best way to ensure success for a child is to help him responsibly pursue the desires in his heart, to learn successful interpersonal skills necessary in relationships, and to learn how the economy he operates in thrives.
Helping children find mentors, tutors, classes, projects, books, tapes, movies, field trips and whatever they need can set them on self-motivating paths heading toward the goals hidden in their hearts as they explore the world to find their love in it.
Often they don't have sight of the goal.
But sometimes, a six year old just knows.
The destination is only
half of the journey.
To delight in discoveries along the way is the other half.
What works for one child more than likely won't work for his brother or sister. Seven children may possibly go in seven different directions.
Albrecht Durer said, "Love and delight are better teachers than compulsion."
Different children have different loves and delights.
Projects offer vision.
Whether a family homeschools its children or not, it is easy to provide entrepreneurial projects to help young people develop vision for service and economic opportunities. Projects also provide practical application for abstract classroom skills. Didn't you just love high school labs?
Homeschooling allows parents to have more time to focus on special projects and take advantage of those teachable moments that occur when no one is looking but a working mom or dad can structure projects for the weekend.
As a homeschooling mother, I consider it my job as primary teacher for my children to prepare them to enter The Real World as contributors, not spectators. I want them to be successful in whatever fields they choose. I want to discover with them what God has placed in their hearts.
I also want them to be financially free so they are able to regularly and generously bless others as a wise man is to do. How can they give to others if they can't pay the power bill?
Solomon also said, "A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children."
To leave an estate for two generations, a good man must have a plan. Contrary to popular belief, financial success doesn't "just happen." Ask any lottery winner who is bankrupt after two years.
Three Aspects of Life
It seems that being truly successful means balancing all three aspects of life - body, soul and spirit.
The Purpose of Life
If a man gains the whole world but loses his soul,
what profit is there?
