The secret to building a successful business is getting the mind of Christ for business.

Your job, as an entrepreneur, is to serve mankind and God with their time and talent. Whatever you create products or services, your objective should be to make the world a better place because you have contributed to it.

You do that by building a team, creating systems, developing products or services, marketing then managing the whole thing. But before you can do any of this successfully, you must have vision.

Vision is like the mist that rises from the earth early in the morning. You can see it rising from the pond in the pasture as you drive by just about daybreak.

Vision can come in an instant of inspiration, then slip away just as quickly because vision is spiritual in nature. It originates from the spirit realm of life.

And often, if you don't capture it, it flees before you suddenly remember itlike a dream you know you had but can't remember. It was there just a minute ago.

It's also about who you become as you take control of yet another important area of your life. Since birth, you've probably been trained to be an employee. You've believed the American dream that to have the good family, the two-story house with the white picket fence and a life of relative ease, that you need a good job.

Then after spending way too much money on education that didn't produce the results you expected, you became disillusioned and felt like you've failed because even though you think you manage your life well, there never seems to be enough money to pay the bills.

You scrimp and save and way too often find yourself telling the kids, "We can't afford that."

So you look for something else to do that will allow you to make just a few extra dollars. And you find your time divided between your job an your new passion.

Most of all, how can we prevent our children from ending up at the top of the wrong ladder.

You know the saying, before you climb the ladder of success, make sure it's propped against the right tree.

We lack vision.

So how do we get it?

The answer is simple.

If you understand a particular concept, it is because God has shined the flashlight of the Holy Spirit into your life on that thing.

He may have used people of understanding or direct revelation, but be sure, the vision you got came from Him.

So instead of focusing on ways to make money, instead we should focus on getting the vision we need so that we can operate in sync with the Creator who made each of us for a particular reason.

An empty salt shaker can't be anything but frustrated because it is not performing its designated task. The same is true for man. Each of us was created to perform a certain task. Certain abilities and gifts have been built into each of us so that we can perform a needed task.

Yet no one ever dedicates even a minute to figuring out what that is. And we find ourselves in a generic educational program aimed at nothing in particular except becoming an employee.

To get an education that you can actually earn a living with, you have to go on to something else: college, on-the-job training, military, apprenticeship or something else.

But what if you're not the employee type?

What if you'd rather have the freedom to have your own business, travel on self-funded mission trips when you want to and make sure you never miss one of your children's ballgames?

What if your are different?

You need mentors and teachers who are successful and who will tell you straight.

How do you think I learned this?

I read.

Every day.

Books about all kinds of subjects.

I am amazed at how many people tell me that once they got out of school they decided to never read another book. That is an example of how their education has failed them.

Education should inspire students to continue learning forever.

You don't have to read books if you're not visually-oriented. Instead, you could listen to CDs or you could watch DVDs. Or you could attend live conferences.

The best thing to do is discover your learning style, then acquire resources produced in that modality.

So on a limited budget, how can you decide which books to study?

That's what I asked.

I buy books, CDs and courses almost every day. I read every day. I travel to about 10 live workshops every year. I often take my children with me.

And from what I've learned, I've created a home business that comfortably supports my family. When I became a widow in 2010, I still had 4 of my 7 children at home. The youngest was 12.

If I had not spent years building that home business, I don't know where my family would be today.

Instead of taking my kids on very cool field trips, I would have had to get a job.
