Joshua Satterfield of Charleston, SC
can solve the Rubik's Cube in about 21 seconds. That's 353rd on the World
Cube Association's official list of the fastest single solves.
At his first competition in Trumbull, Conn., he solved the cube in less than
one minute.
He has competed in the U.S. Open 2007 Rubik's Cube Competition and has
traveled to Budapest, Hungary with his family to compete in the Rubik's Cube
World Competition where the cube was born. Wonder Works even donated part of its
sales to help him fund the trip.
The cool thing is, Joshua just turned 14.

How Did Joshua Get Started?
"Joshua got a Nintendo DS for Christmas, 2005," says his dad Jay Satterfield,
a self-employed insurance broker. "He solved all the games he had and wanted
more. I told him I would get him more games if he would quit biting his
fingernails, but instead he just picked up the Rubik's Cube."
Joshua loved the challenge and started studying different methods of solving
the cube. He compiled his studies in a three-ring binder and memorized hundreds
of algorithms.
After he figured out how to solve the cube, he started entering cube-solving
tournaments.
Then he studied the methods of a pioneer in cube solving, Jessica Fridrichs,
a professor in the computer and engineering department at the State University
of New York-Binghamton.
"That's when I started getting fast," Joshua says.
He's been to competitions in Florida, Atlanta and New Jersey where
participants do five solves and the official time is designated by averaging the
middle three solves.
At tournaments, contestants also solve the cube one-handed and solve cubes
that are 4-by-4-by-4 and 5-by-5-by-5. They also solve Rubik's Magic, a
mechanical puzzle.
On official lists compiled from results of World Cube Association-sanctioned
tournaments, Joshua ranks 281 in the world at one-handed solves, 324 at the
4-cube puzzle, 176th at the 5-cube puzzle and 70th at Rubik's
Magic.

How Did He Get So Good?
Joshua is blessed to have very supportive parents who believe in encouraging
their five children to follow their passion. They place high priority on home
education and stress learning by experience, rather than by sitting at a
desk.
Before Joshua even started school, Jay & his wife Kami, realized the
traditional school schedule would not fit with their schedule. So they committed
to educate their children at home, allowing them to explore any area of interest
because of their belief that God has a plan for each child's life. They felt
they need to always be available to help them succeed.
Yet they had no idea where learning to solve the Rubik's Cube would take
Joshua. Jay challenged him to learn how to solve it, even though he had no idea
of how to do it. Then when he figured it out, Jay challenged him to do it
faster.
When Jay and Joshua searched the internet for faster methods to solve the
cube, Jay discovered official competitions and told Joshua if he could solve it
in less than a minute, he would take him to one.
That was all it took for Joshua to be consumed with the project for days. He
had to memorize many algorithms which served as math for the week.
When he broke a minute, the family was off to New York for their very first
competition! Since then they have traveled quite a bit and they are very excited
about what the Lord has in store for Joshua's future.

When I saw what Joshua could do at our Entrepreneur Days 2008 home business
conference in Atlanta, I asked him to demonstrate his skill from the stage for
our guests during our Saturday night program.
The crowd loved him!
One of our speakers, Adwords expert Greg Cesar, even challenged him by
solving the cube behind his back. Greg did it but not near as fast as Joshua.
So I asked Joshua if he would be interested in teaching a class for anyone
who might be interested and he agreed.
