Kids who are different.

I call them Geniuses.

I have at least one child who I discovered years ago to be different.

When I read the book The Edison Trait, I finally understood and appreciated his differences.

This book identifies three types of genius. You may find your child within its pages.

Dreamers are those children who like to daydream. They are imaginative and artistic. Ideas and stories have personal meanings to them. These students often become artists, craftsmen, writers and thinkers.

Discoverers are doers. They love to find out what happens for themselves. They "do" first and ask questions later. Like Thomas Edison, they like to experiment, often with themselves, with others and with the rules.

Dynamos have an unusually high energy level. They are impulsive, sometimes agressive, and enjoy power, speed and personal challenge.

I share this because I have been privileged to watch my oldest son grow out of the box, in spite of my best efforts to contain him. I share this, not as a teacher, but as an excited cheerleader who wants to encourage others to see differently and help their children pursue their God-given giftings.

When my oldest son was 14, I realized he was one of those Edison types but I didn't know what to do with him. I was pregnant with our sixth child and wasn't up to a challenge. So I gave him to God.

Soon after, my husband announced that this son would spend a month with an entrepreneur friend of ours in Idaho who had retired when he was 25.

Now this son is 21 and lives totally outside of the box.

I want to share with you what this college-educated homeschooling mother has learned from him and what I have learned to see.

There is a genius hiding inside your child.

It is our duty as parents to
find it, nurture it, finance it and watch it mature.

Others may see it,
but moms and dads can devote more time and money
to finding ways and resources
to develop the genius within.

One Great Book

The Edison Trait by Dr. Lucy Jo Palladino is an incredible book that explains why some children are different from "normal" children. There are dreamers, discoverers and dynamos who overflow with ideas and projects that often amaze others around them. This book will help you discover if you have a child of genius and will give you helpful tips for developing that genius at home. It has recently been republished as Dreamers, Discoverers and Dynamos: how to help the child who is bright, bored, and having problems in school.
