Fathers

A good society celebrates the ideal of the man who puts his family first.

Because our society is now lurching in the opposite direction,
I see the Good Family Man as the principal casualty of today's weakening fatherhood script.
And because I cannot imagine a good society without him,
I offer him as the protagonist in the stronger script that I believe is both necessary and possible.

--David Blankenhorn

Though a child may not communicate it, Dad is the most important thing in life.

The resources mentioned below offer dads encouragement and insight.

If you are a homeschooling family, you probably have more than the usual 2.3 children and an increased work load for Mom. She usually does well until Puberty becomes the straw that breaks the camel's back.

The financial burden is increased on the sole breadwinner in a two-income society and the pressure on the family can be almost unbearable at times.

Help for the Stressed Dad

Many families are supplementing their incomes in the many avenues now available online.

Families all over the world have discovered how easy it is to make money on ebay. Not only does it offer a profit and a place to get rid of all that stuff in the house, but it also offers a great education in economics.

And it offers Dad a chance to work from home.

Resources to Encourage Dad

In the Seminar Tapes by The Elijah Company, Chris Davis focuses on the role of the father. One of the six tapes is entitled Turning the Hearts of the Fathers. If you don't know him, Chris Davis is one of the visionaries in the homeschooling movement. He is worth paying money to hear.

One of the best videos our family has viewed on what it means to be a good father is Dads, The Men in the Gap produced by Konos. In it, seven dads share lessons they have learned about their roles as the man of the house. Included is a workbook for serious students of fatherhood.

David Blankenhorn says in his, Fatherless America, that not having a good father in the home is our country's most urgent social problem. In early America, many men worked near the home or on the farm. Today, many children don't even know what their fathers do for a living.

The book Missing From Action by Hardenbrook explains how society and the media have changed the role models for dads through the last few generations through TV and movies. We've gone from John Wayne to Rambo.

Wild at Heart by John Eldridge is a man's book about raising boys. Although we don't agree with his choice of movies mentioned throughout the book, this book will give you incredible insight about raising young men in today's society. You may want to read it before you give it to your young people. It contains one section you may not be comfortable with them reading.
